THANK YOU

If this is your first pair of skates - congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of skating!

We are chuffed you chose us, and hope these skates bring you as much joy as they bring us.

DISCLAIMER!

Roller skating is a dangerous activity and can result in serious injury or death.

Practice at your own risk and always practice within your skill level.

We recommend the use of safety gear (knee pads, wrist guards, elbow pads and helmet), especially if you are a beginner.

Remember to check your skates are safe and in working order before each use.

For some tips on how to check and maintain your skates, see the resources below.

SET UP YOUR SKATES

This short video will talk you through how to adjust your skates to make sure you have a smooth ride.

You can also read the maintenance tips below to ensure your skates perform optimally for a long life.

SKATE PARTS & MAINTENANCE

TRUCKS

Your trucks allow your skates to turn when you apply pressure to one side (edge) of your skate.

Trucks have a 'pivot pin' which sit in the pivot cups of your plate, and are attached to the plate by the kingpin. Your wheels attach to the axles of your truck.

You should learn how to adjust your trucks to your preferred tightness. We explain it in the video above if you don't know how to do this. You will want to change the tightness on your trucks as your skill level or interests change - make sure to learn how to do so!

You can start with tighter trucks, and slowly loosen them to increase manoeuvrability.

Trucks that are too loose turn easily but are hard to control and will increase instability. Trucks that are too tight will be very stiff and turning might be hard. Trucks that are uneven can create the feeling of your skates pulling in one direction, so make sure they are all adjusted evenly.

TOE STOPS

Your toe stops are on the front of your skate and are secured by a nut and washer. Our toe stops are threaded and screw into your plate - just like a bolt.

Tighten the nut that holds your toe stop in place very firmly before skating. Make sure to use the tool provided or your favourite skate tool to do this - tightening them with your hands won't do the job! Toe stops need to be checked and tightened regularly.

Toe stops are used for stopping when rolling backwards - never forwards! They can also be used for tricks, spins, etc.

Different people like their toe stops at different heights. Generally, 3-4 fingers distance in between your back wheels and the ground when you put your toe stop down is a good height. You should be able to easily put your toe stop down without tipping over, although like everything skate related this can take some practice.

BEARINGS

Your bearings are inside your wheels, and are what makes your wheels spin. Each wheel uses 2 bearings, so you need 16 bearings for a pair of roller skates.

It is recommended that you skate on dry surfaces that are free from sand and debris. Over time, dirt will get inside your bearings and they will need cleaning. You can buy special bearing cleaner from your local skate shop. If you skate in water or damp surfaces, your bearings will rust, so ensure that you keep them dry! Bearings will usually need to be replaced every 6 months to 2 years, depending on how often you skate and how well you take care¯of them. There are a range of bearings on the market. The higher the ABEC number, the higher quality the bearings are.

WHEELS

Your wheels slot onto your truck axles and are held in by a nut.

Fasten the nut all the way in until it stops (without applying too much force or you might damage the bearings), then turn the nut back a quarter of a turn.

Your wheels should spin freely. If they make rattling or clicking sounds when spinning they might be too loose and should be tightened by adjusting the nut.

If you are a beginner, tighter nuts will make the wheel spin slower which can be good for learning. You can loosen them off as you get more comfortable to increase your speed.

TOE GUARDS

We strongly recommend that you use toe guards to protect your skates! Especially if you are planning on skating in the skate park.

Toe guards fit over the front of your skate, and will help protect them from scuffs and tears. Our skates are made of soft suede leather that will rip through if you repeatedly drag your toes on the ground when falling or practicing certain skills.
